A Message from CEO Regina Widdows
In 1974, a group of families of individuals with mental illness and clinicians from Rutgers University opened a home in West Windsor Township with initial funding from the State of New Jersey to move their loved ones from psychiatric institutions into the community.
Back then, mental healthcare was very different – most people with severe mental illness were confined to psychiatric hospitals, which often resulted in them losing their skills, hope, and desire to look after themselves. The founders of SERV had a more compassionate vision for people with mental illness. They treated people with mental illness with dignity, compassion, and respect and empowered them to focus on recovery and build meaningful lives in the community. Today, this approach to mental health services is widely accepted.
For over 50 years, SERV has grown to help more than 3,000 people a year in 11 counties. We help with living arrangements, counseling, case management, education, and job training for those struggling with mental health needs, addiction, and developmental disabilities. Your support makes our work possible. We are so grateful for your support during our first 50 years and are excited for the next 50.
